Celebrate all that is you - choose joy

The word “joy” is one we tend to hear more frequently this time of year. We are trying to find it, give it, have it, keep it, and not take it for granted. Joyful songs, joyful memories, and joyful holiday moments are all things we look forward to, but it wasn’t until I  stumbled upon a poem by Donna Ashworth that I thought maybe we’re missing it more than we think. Donna’s poem talks about how we sometimes, unknowingly ignore joy because it doesn’t show up the way we expected it to. That it sneaks into our lives while we are SO busy making plans to locate it. She shares the idea that joy chooses us, not the other way around. So, we wanted to share her beautiful words in case they resonate with you too.

Joy Chose You

Joy does not arrive with fanfare, on a red carpet strewn with flowers of a perfect life.

Joy sneaks in, as you pour your cup of coffee, watching the sun hit your favorite tree, just right.

And you usher joy away because you are not ready for it.

Your house is not as it must be for such a distinguished guest.

But joy cares nothing for your messy home or your bank balance or your waistline, you see.

Joy is supposed to slither through the cracks of your imperfect life, that’s how joy works.

You cannot invite her, you can only be ready when she appears.

And hug her with meaning, because in this very moment, joy chose you.

~Donna Ashworth

There is something so very peaceful about this interpretation of joy! As you move through the hustle and bustle of December, go ahead and sing your heart out in the car (bonus points for embarrassing your kids) or snort laugh if the moment calls for it. If we wait to feel joy in the depths of our souls, we might miss a lot of the good stuff.

Breath is an an effective way to be in the moment.  We can't breath in the past and we can't breath in the future so take a big deep breath to remind yourself you are here right now.
