Fancy a little Balance

Fancy a little Balance

Yin and Yang or is in Yang Yin?

I am sure you are familiar with the symbol but what about the idea behind it?

Generally speaking, yin is characterized as an inward energy that is feminine, still, dark, and negative. On the other hand, yang is characterized as outward energy, masculine, hot, bright, and positive.  It has nothing to do with gender.

The way we lead our lives in the western world is geared up around Yang energy the doing.  Yin energy is around the being which I don’t know about you is something I am not always comfortable with - even though I teach yin yoga!

This week we have the Diwali festival which is a celebration of light followed by the new moon and a solar eclipse.  These 2 events inspired me to think more about balance and what we can do to celebrate both parts of them.

I am sure you have heard the phrase ‘let your light shine’ this how we tend to present ourselves to the world.  More often than not it it the side of ourselves we want people to see.  Which can sometimes be exhausting.  i was once told I have a good ‘game face’ I would feel like I was dying on the inside yet come what may the show must go on.  It’s exhausting!

Why do I do it?

To be honest I am not 100% sure why.  I think I always have?

What I have got better at is the being - the yin which I why I enjoy teaching it.

The theme for my classes has been around release.  Which again comes back to balance.  What to hold on to and what to let go of.  We live in our head and identify with the internal narrative as being us, however we store so much wisdom in our bodies.  Yin yoga is a great way to tap into this.  Holding the poses for longer allows us to feel it in our bodies and notice the tight places where we hold on to things.  To then release them.  As we do this we also get to scrutinize our narrative.  Does it serve us?  What can we let go?   When we let go of what no longer serves us we make space for all that we want a need in our lives.  This can be anything, from thoughts to things even people.

Whether you do a yoga class or not it is giving yourself the time to be.

This can be anything that you enjoy, makes you feel calm.

For example

eating a favourite food or drink

moving - dancing is one of mine

listening to music
