A capsule collection is an ideal way to edit part of your wardrobe to suit the season and more importantly your mood. If makes dressing through the week super simple as you get a chance to wear all of your current favourites.…it’s basically a collection of essential items that flawlessly integrate together. That means that you can mix and match and wear all of these pieces in a load of different ways. I often get questions from you about how to build a capsule wardrobe and here are my three biggest tips…
1) Pick a Color Story
What are the colours you a drawn to? This can change with season the. I advocate swapping out the classic neutrals (black, navy, beige) with metallics and this season especially explore leopard print as a neutral alternative, they are perfect for mixing in fun colorful pieces.
2) Choose Basics Wisely
Make sure you’re spending the majority of your budget on high-quality basics that will last you years and years! Consider your body shape sleeve lengths, hemlines, and all of the things that help us at over 40 feel more confident.
3) Love Your Style
Last but not least you don’t need to buy new things! Find those favorites. The wardrobe lurkers as I call them:) A capsule wardrobe is ideal to bring a new lease of life to your look.

1. What exactly is a capsule collection wardrobe?
A capsule collection wardrobe is a curated selection of interchangeable clothing items that allows you to create multiple outfits with minimal pieces. It focuses on high-quality, versatile staples that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
2. How many items should a capsule collection have?
There's no magic number! It depends on your lifestyle and needs. A typical capsule collection might have around 30-50 pieces, including clothing, shoes, and accessories. However, it can be smaller or larger depending on your preferences.
3. How do I choose the right pieces for my capsule collection?
- Consider your lifestyle: Think about what activities you do most often and choose clothes that suit those needs.
- Focus on neutrals: Build a foundation with neutral-colored pieces like black, navy, gray, and white. These can be easily mixed and matched.
- Select versatile styles: Opt for classic cuts and silhouettes that can be dressed up or down. Look for pieces that can be layered for added versatility.
- Don't forget quality: Invest in well-made clothing that will last longer and drape better.
4. What are some essential items for a capsule collection?
- Tops: Button-down shirts, t-shirts, sweaters, blouses.
- Bottoms: Jeans, dress pants, skirt, comfortable everyday dress.
- Outerwear: Jacket, blazer, trench coat (depending on climate).
- Shoes: Casual everyday shoes, flats or heels for work/dressy occasions.
- Accessories: Scarves, belts, jewelry to add personality and complete outfits.
5. But what about trends?
Trends can be fun, but for a capsule collection, focus on classic styles that won't go out of fashion quickly. You can incorporate trendy elements with accessories or a statement piece.
6. How can I keep my capsule collection from getting boring?
- Shop your closet: Rediscover forgotten pieces and experiment with new combinations.
- Accessorize strategically: Accessories can completely transform an outfit.
- Invest in statement pieces: One or two statement pieces can add personality and variety to your capsule.
- Embrace layering: Layering allows you to create new looks from existing pieces.
7. I don't have a lot of money to spend on a whole new wardrobe. Can I still build a capsule collection?
Absolutely! Building a capsule collection is about maximizing what you already have. Shop your closet, invest in quality basics over trend pieces, and look for deals at thrift stores or
